International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a globally recognized and autonomous body that focuses on developing and publishing international standards. It is the successor to the International Federation of the National Standardizing Associations (ISA), which operated from 1928 to 1942. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the General Assembly is ISO’s decision-making body which consists of representatives from the members and elected leaders called principal officers.

ISO plays a vital role in promoting consistency and excellence across various industries worldwide. The organization’s mission is to enrich lives by promoting universal standards and ensuring the safety, dependability, and excellence of products and services. ISO standards are created collaboratively by ISO members who represent a country and are considered an authoritative body on standards.

These members are national organizations dedicated to the advancement and advocacy of international standards across various domains, including technology, scientific testing procedures, working conditions, and societal concerns. In turn, ISO and its members sell detailed documentation outlining these standards.

Currently, ISO has 167 member countries and has published over 24,000 standards.
