Modified:
ISO 18739, “Dentistry – Vocabulary of process chain for CAD/CAM systems,” has just been released. It has been developed specifically to bring this technology into standardized format with regards to the language that’s used. With no uniform terminology previously, users of these dental CAD/CAM systems have been confused. Now there’s hope for consistency across products from the various manufacturers.
In the standards business, the development of vocabulary standards signals a couple of things. First, setting up a consistent vocabulary for a technology can signal that standards development in that area is about to begin. Secondly, it can suggest that a technology has reach a market-threashold where users need to reduce the confusion caused by multiple terms meaning the same thing.
In this case, dental CAD/CAM systems are becoming more accepted in dental practices, especially with the use of additive manufacturing. With a number of players in this arena, understanding both the work flow and terminology is essential for both dentists and dental technicians. This standard provides manufacturers and users with guidance on both.
The main body of the ISO 18739 is a listing of terms and their definitions. Additionally there’s an informative Annex A with a flow chart of the process chain that’s used in CAD/CAM systems. An Index provides you with quick links to the definitions of the listed terminology.
