Yes, that pesky AMS C 26074, “Electroless Nickel Coatings,” is back! It’s been cancelled, it’s been reinstated, it’s been cancelled again, and now finally it’s been reinstated as a stabilized standard! And if you go back to the challenges faced by those of you who used the document in it’s original form, MIL-C-26074, the web is even more tangled…
Of course, the real problem has always been that while the replacement documents, AMS 2404 and AMS 2433, are good for most cases, there are still legacy applications that rely on the original 26074 requirements. Now, at last, a solution to this problem has been reached.
The committee in charge of the standard, the AMS B, has made it abundantly clear what the situation is at the beginning of this new 9-page Revision D. The new edition withdraws the previous Revision C with it’s cancellation notice and supersession information. Revision D is stabilized, which means that the document will not be reviewed in the future unless a specific issue arises.
The committee recommends the use of AMS 2404, “Electroless Nickel Coatings,” for new design. There are 2 tables at the beginning of the AMS C 26074 Revision D that correlate the class and thickness from one document to the other.
Further, they do provide some guidance regarding certification issues. This has proven to be a sticking point in the past and is no doubt part of the reason for the republication of the document with this new status.
Remember, the last technical update of this Aerospace Material Specification occurred in August 1998, when the military document was adopted as an AMS publication. Every reissue since that time has been for the specific need to migrate the user base off of the specification and onto a generally used industry document. This last revision shows that there is some material in the AMS C 26074 that remains valid in some instances and that cannot be replaced by either the AMS 2404 or the other potential replacement candidate, AMS 2433.
You can now use the AMS C 26074 and be in compliance. It is a current specification rather than a cancelled one. But I will remind you that the AMS 2404 was updated specifically to provide the technical equivalency needed for migration to that standard. So it is advised to only use the 26074 Revision D when contract or certification issues make it impossible to avoid.
