New AMS QQ-S-763 for Corrosion Resistant Steel Released

Modified:

AMS QQ-S-763, “Steel, Corrosion Resistant, Bars, Wire, Shapes, and Forgings,” has just been revised.  The new Revision C can be purchased from Document Center Inc. in either paper or pdf download format.  The new AMS QQ-S-763C replaces the previous inactive Revision B, which is now obsolete.

This is another of the Mil Spec adoptions that is being revised in advance of being stabilized.  Originally the document was the Federal Specification QQ-S-763.  During Mil Spec reform, it was cancelled as a Federal Specification and taken over by SAE International as an Aerospace Material Specification.  Over time, SAE has identified other SAE and ASTM Standards that can be used in place of this one.

AMS QQ-S-763 was inactivated back with the release of Revision A in 2003.  With the new Revision C, the document has been restored to active status temporarily.  Corrections have been made to errors in the table of similar specifications.

The active status for the document is  temporary.  Even though it is active, SAE does not recommend it for new design.  In fact, a further Revision D is expected to be released soon with the new “Stabilized” status.  This will mean that SAE is no longer reviewing the specification on a regular basis.  Also, it will not be recommended for new design.

Users of the AMS QQ-S-763 will find Figure A on page 2 of the 22 page revision.  This is a table that goes through each product form and defines either a similar ASTM or AMS standard (or both) for each class.  You will find that in some cases there is no similar replacement standard from either data set for a particular form.  This is why the document will still be published, for those few unique cases where it is the only guidance available.

Document Center provides AMS and all SAE Standards under license agreement with SAE.  You can purchase them in either paper or pdf format on our website, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re happy to assist you with all your standards questions and requirements.
